Engineers release images of new Monticello fire station design

Engineers have released images of the completed design for a new fire station in Monticello, culminating more than a decade of research and discussion about the construction of a new central station for the city.

The Monticello City Council in December voted 5-3 to build the station on the former W.C. Whaley property on North Main, drawing applause from spectators in the nearly full council chambers.

The vote came after nearly a decade of discussion about where to build the station. Though the city purchased the former elementary school as the location for a new fire station, some area residents were opposed because the property is located in a historic district. They cited potential traffic issues and aesthetics, fearing that the city would construct a metal building that would adversely impact their property values and the historic integrity of the neighborhood.

The drawings for the new station do not reflect a metal building.

Monticello Mayor Allen Maxwell said the plans are not yet complete. Engineers are still working on some of the electrical design. Once that is complete, the city will advertise for construction bids. The city has budgeted more than $900,000 for construction.
