UAM Forestry student keeps close tabs on campus trees

Tyler Raines knows trees, particularly those on the University of Arkansas at Monticello campus. Since June, Raines, a junior forestry student from Warren, has worked closely with University Forester Chris Stuhlinger to compile and maintain a comprehensive inventory of every tree on campus, a daunting task made easier with new software and hardware that creates a file on each tree with its location, species, diameter and relative health. Raines has an interest in urban forestry … Continued

Research in Warren Prairie gaining national attention

Scientific research takes many forms. For Drs. Karen and Marvin Fawley, that means crawling around the Warren Prairie on their stomachs, searching for tiny plants with the unwieldy name Geocarpon minimum, a small leafy plant no more than a quarter-inch tall. The Fawleys call it “belly botany” and while the technique may sound odd – and a little uncomfortable – it’s yielding big results. Geocarpon minimum has been federally classified as endangered and is … Continued

Harvey will continue to coach the Boll Weevil baseball team, which he has led to a record of 193-146 in seven seasons. UAM Chancellor Karla Hughes said Harvey’s appointment “lends continuity to … Continued

Professional bullfighter, UAM alumnus to hold book signing

To a casual observer, Jeremy Sparks is either incredibly brave or crazy. Sparks, a 2001 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, is a professional bullfighter but don’t be taken in by the images conjured up by the title. He doesn’t wear a “suit of lights” or wave a red cape. He is a rodeo bullfighter whose job is to protect riders from a charging bull after they’ve been thrown or completed their ride. … Continued

Dr. John Davis named Director of Governmental Relations at UAM

John Davis is passionate about politics. A quick look around his office is a dead giveaway, although you might not be able to guess his political leanings, which is just the way he wants it. Davis’ cramped office on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom Building at the University of Arkansas at Monticello is adorned with photographs of President George H.W. Bush, a young Bill Clinton campaigning for Congress, a Norman Rockwell print … Continued

Dr. Karen Fawley: Outstanding Faculty Award winner

The secret to good teaching is patience and the ability to listen, according to Dr. Karen Fawley. Fawley has learned both skills during a decade on the faculty in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. “When I was younger, I used to get frustrated when I was not reaching a student,” Fawley admits. “I’ve learned patience through the years.” Patience – and the ability to listen and … Continued
