Dr. Jim Lewis, 84, of Dumas, passed away on October 15, 2019.
Dr. Lewis was born on September 29, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois and was the son of the late, Elmer and Sally Lou Barker Lewis. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Jeanie Beavert.
Dr. Lewis graduated from Smackover High School, Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University. He then served in the United States Navy from 1953–1957 and was honored with the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was also a graduate of Mid-South College of Optometry in Memphis.
Dr. Lewis worked a short time in Augusta, Arkansas, before he and his young family moved to Dumas and opened Dr. Jim Lewis, Optometrist, where he practiced for 50-plus years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in El Dorado, the Dumas Lions Club, Dumas Bass Club, Kiwanis, and past president of Walnut Lake Country Club.
Survivors are his wife, Linda Lewis of Dumas; a son, Eddie Lewis of Sheridan; a daughter, Jamie Lloyd and husband, Bill of Watson; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Rudy and Sherron Shuffield of Royal, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Anthany Lewis, Ashley King and Slade Lloyd; and four great grandchildren, Ella, Keera, Brazen and Ava; a niece, Ellen Clark of Hot Springs, and a number of other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 17 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Griffin Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 18 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Rudy Shuffield officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date.
