Drew Memorial Hospital welcomes First Baby of 2018

Nyla Jones was born at Drew Memorial Health System on January 1 at 10:24 a.m., making her the first baby born at the hospital in 2018.

Dr. Kelly Shrum delivered the 5-pound, 19-inch baby, the first child born to proud parents Keyonna Hamilton and Carlos Jones of Monticello.

The Drew Memorial Hospital Auxiliary presents the first baby born at Drew Memorial each year with a basket of gifts to celebrate their arrival. This year’s basket included a baby blanket and door hanger from the hospital gift shop, socks, outfits, toys, socks, washcloths, a changing pad, and many more items.

Auxilian Linda Barber presented the gift basket on behalf of the organization.

Barber’s duties as a member of the Auxiliary include assisting the nursery with paperwork and working in the hospital gift shop. Auxiliary members provide thousands of hours of volunteer service each year to the hospital in most departments and holds fundraisers to support the hospital’s mission of providing quality health care in the region.

Drew Memorial Health System serves a population of 200,000 in Southeast Arkansas. The hospital offers childbirth and breastfeeding classes for expectant parents. In 2017, 273 babies were delivered at Drew Memorial Health System.
