Following a 5-1 start to the 2014 season, the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team has been ranked No. 15 and No. 21 in this week’s College Baseball Lineup and D2BaseballNews.com national polls.
Of UAM’s five wins so far, three have come against nationally ranked opposition. UAM defeated then-ranked No. 15 St. Mary’s 16-5 in seven innings and defeated then-ranked No. 19 Central Missouri 4-2, both wins coming at Minute Maid Park before winning the second half of a home double-header against top-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato 8-5 this past Sunday. Mankato handed UAM its only loss of the season so far with a 4-3 decision in the first half of that double-header, which was UAM’s home opener.
College Baseball Lineup and D2BaseballNews.com make up half of the outlets that release national rankings for NCAA Division II baseball. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association will release its next poll on February 17. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, considered the official source for NCAA Division II baseball national rankings, usually releases its weekly polls on Monday afternoons.
Both of UAM’s current No. 15 and No. 21 rankings are the highest in program history since joining the NCAA Division II in 1996.
In related news, this Tuesday’s home game against Lyon College has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as a part of double-header against Lyon on March 25 in Batesville, Ark. The Weevils are now scheduled to return to the field this Friday and Saturday in Alva, Okla. in the Great American Conference opener, a three-game series against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
