UAM wins 11-inning battle in Game 1 of GAC tournament

The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team took game one, 7-6, in the opening round series in the Great American Conference Tournament against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Game one of this best of three GAC post-season series featured the Weevils (28-19, 22-11 GAC) gaining the early 1-0 advantage over the Savage Storm of SOSU (16-28-1, 13-17 GAC) with a Brady Weiss solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Southeastern took a 3-1 lead in the following inning with a two-run home run.

UAM tied the contest up in the third with a Brady Weiss hit by pitch with the bases loaded which scored one run, and a Sean Wagner sacrifice fly also brought home the tying run. Andres Rios surged the Weevils ahead with a two run double to center field, giving the number three seeded team the 5-3 lead.

The Savage Storm continued to battle back throughout the ballgame after scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning, and two additional runs in the eighth, putting the visitors out in front at 6-5.

Arkansas-Monticello’s Wagner sent a ball over the center field wall tying the game at 6-6, which ultimately forced extra innings.

The match-up continued until the bottom of the eleventh when UAM’s Brian Ray took the first pitch and sent it deep to center field for the walk-off solo home run to secure the Weevils’ victory at 7-6.

Grant Black started on the mound for UAM pitching 7.0 total innings, allowing five earned runs, two walks, and totaled 10 strikeouts on the day.
