Two people were killed in Drew County Thursday night when their vehicle left the roadway, entered a steep embankment, overturned and landing in a ditch full of water, according to an Arkansas State Police preliminary report.
Drew Anthony Thomas, 22, of Monticello was driving south on Arkansas 35 at 7:25 p.m. when the accident occurred. Thomas and his passenger, Talia Latrice Pirtle, 21, of Memphis both died.
According to the state police report, the 2000 Toyota Thomas was driving left the roadway on the right side, entered into a steep embankment, overturned onto its top and landed in a ditch full of water. The vehicle came to a final rest on its top submerged in water, facing southwest.
The weather was clear and the roadway was dry when the accident occurred.
At least seven people have died as a result of crashes on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
