Arkansas reached two grim milestones this week. The cumulative total of confirmed and probable Covid-19 cases statewide surpassed 70,000 and the number of deaths attributed to the virus surpassed 1,000.

The number of new deaths is 1,003 but another 139, listed as “probable”, will be added to the total. Probable deaths are those in which the person did not have a PCR test before they died but did have a positive antigen test or Covid-19 was listed on the person’s death certificate as a contributing factor even though they were not tested, according to Dr. Mike Cima, the Arkansas Department of Health’s chief epidemiologist and associate director for science.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson six months ago, on March 11, declared a public health emergency in Arkansas when the state saw its first case of Covid-19.

While more than 64,000 have recovered and there are days in which the number of new cases appear to be on a downward trend, those days are sometimes followed by significant spikes of more than 1,000.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Southeast Arkansas is shown below.

Tuesday, at his first weekly Covid-18 update, after 144 daily reports, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced that the Arkansas Department of Health had received 12,000 antigen tests. “This is great news,” he said. “It will greatly expand our testing capacity in Arkansas as well as continuing to increase our PCR testing.”

The tests, which Hutchinson described as simple and quick, will be distributed primarily to schools, colleges, critical access hospitals, small rural hospitals and local health units.

“What this means for the average citizen is that they can go in, as usual, to get a PCR test but they also have another option. If they want a point-of-care test (an antigen test) they can go in and have that test taken at their local health unit or other place that it is distributed. This will really help us with our K-12 education for quicker turn-around and greater access, as well as higher ed. Those are the first priorities we have for these new antigen tests that we have obtained.”
