An ongoing dispute between neighbors led to a fatal shooting Sunday afternoon in Ashley County, according to Ashley County Sheriff David Johnson.
Jason L. Johnson, 37, of Hamburg, is alleged to have fatally shot 78-year-old Randy L. Coulter following a verbal altercation on Ashley Road 948 off Highway 82, west of Hamburg, according to the sheriff.
Sheriff Johnson said Jason L. Johnson allegedly fired multiple gunshots at Coulter.
The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. Sunday on the roadway in front of Jason Johnson’s home at 150 Ashley 948. Coulter resided at 331 Ashley Road 948.
“Multiple shots were fired, striking Mr. Coulter,” the sheriff said.
Sheriff Johnson said there were eye witnesses to the shooting and there have been ongoing disputes between the two men who are believed to have been related, perhaps by marriage. There was a verbal altercation prior to the shooting, he said.
The shooting is still under investigation and, the sheriff said.
Jason Johnson is being held in the Ashley County jail. He has a first appearance hearing on Monday afternoon before Circuit Judge Don Glover.
