The Drew County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an Ashley County teen who apparently downed Thursday in the Saline River in Drew County.

The body of Benjamin Washam, 16, was discovered by a local swimmer Thursday evening at approximately 5:15 p.m. at Gee’s Landing on the Saline River in Drew County, according to Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober.

Washam was last seen swimming with friends at Gee’s Landing early Thursday morning sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. He had not been reported missing.

“When I got there (at Gee’s Landing) I called my department and had them send a message to all Southeast Arkansas counties and there was no person fitting his description reported missing,” Gober said.

A small Crossett Riding Club card found in the pocket of the teen’s pants led to his identification. The death is under investigation and the body was transported to the Arkansas Crime Lab, according to Gober.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this young man,” Gober said.
