Betty Yates

Betty Jane Yates, 78, of Crossett passed away December 5, 2013 at her home.

She was born on September 11, 1935 to William and Ida Ogden in Fulton, La.

She married the love of her life, Donald Ray Yates on December 31, 1959 after three years of dating. The couple began a family and she soon became known as “the boss”.

Mrs. Yates’ favorite holiday was Christmas and was very secretive about the upcoming festivities. The only thing everyone knew prior to Christmas was that the menu would be the same, they would each be given a secret number for gifts, and the same Santa head with the bell would be displayed. The only time she allowed someone to open a gift before Christmas was one year during an ice storm when she had to cook meals on a Coleman stove, she allowed her son, Ronnie, to open his gift, which conveniently turned out to be an omelet pan. She allowed him to open the gift so she could cook with it.

She also enjoyed family reunions, church trips and shopping. She could shop all day long and may not bought anything but she would have touched every item in the store. Her hobbies also included talking on the phone, listening intently to her police scanner and crappie fishing from their camp at Grand Lake in Eudora.

Mrs. Yates was a homemaker the majority of her life and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Jesse and Ida Drue Ogden; and two brothers, Russell Oneal Ogden and Roland “AJ” Ogden.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Ray Yates; four children, Connie Anita Herrington of Crossett, Ronnie Oneal Bowen (Vickie) of Crossett, Carolyn Sue Hendrix (Robert) of West Monroe, La., and Pamela Ruth Abney (Tim) of Crossett; four siblings, Reba Burnett, Arderie Ogden, and Molly Stanley all of Crossett and Ronald Ogden of Macon, GA; 10 grandchildren, Bryan Fields, Donna McDonald, Brooke Herrington, Chad Hendrix, Jessica Morrison, Ryan Abney, Blake Abney, Jennifer Abney, Jarrod Bowen and Stacie Midwell; and 14 great grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m., December 7, 2013 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Bro. Eric Hodge and Bro. David Tohlen officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Medders Funeral Home in Crossett.

Pallbearers will be Chad Hendrix, Ryan Abney, Blake Abney, Jarrod Bowen, Patrick Morrison, Ken McDonald, Bryan Fields and Andrew McDonald.

A visitation will be held at Medders Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on December 6.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House at donate.rmhc.org.
