At the push of a button sometime next month, the old Greenville Bridge pier on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River will be blown up, shooting the mighty Mississippi River waters hundreds of feet into the air.
The Delta Men’s Association is selling raffle tickets for a chance to push the button that blows up the old pier. Tickets are $10 each and all proceeds go to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the Delta Men’s Association’s primary charity.
Tickets may be purchased online from the Delta Men’s Association or from Larry Burchfield, WABG feature reporter, 662-332-0949.
The deadline to purchase a raffle ticket is midnight November 7. The drawing will be held on November 8 and broadcast live on WABG Channel 6 in Greenville, Miss.
Through arrangements with the contractor and towboat owners demolishing the old bridge, the Delta Men’s Association received permission to conduct a raffle that will allow the winner a chance to push the button that blows up the old pier on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River, according to the Delta Men’s Association web site.
The demolition, which is expected to be a “huge” explosion will take place on or about November 15, weather permitting. When the pier is demolished to 40 below the water level, a gusher of Mississippi River water will shoot hundreds of feet into the air. The button pusher will be safely located on a towboat in the Mississippi River.
In addition to the privilege of blowing up the pier, the winner also receives a $150 gift certificate to Doe’s Steak House in Greenville, one night’s lodging (to be announced), and other prizes that will be announced soon, according to the Delta Men’s Association.
Due to weather, demolition progress, and U. S Coast Guard navigation regulations, the November 15 date is approximate. The exact date will be scheduled by contractor and Delta Men’s Association will notify the winner of the date as soon as possible.
