Circuit Judge Sam Pope denied bond Thursday for the Lake Village man suspected in the May 3 robbery and beating death of Chicot County Tax Collector Nell Johnson.
John Thomas Brooks, 49, of Lake Village, is charged with capital murder, aggravated residential burglary, and aggravated robbery.
At Brooks’ bond hearing, prosecutors presented what they believe to be key DNA evidence showing Brooks’ presence in Johnson’s home at the time of the murder. His DNA was found on a cigarette butt discovered in a toilet at Johnson’s home and both his and Johnson’s DNA was on a pair of gloves discovered near her home, according to 10th Judicial District Deputy Prosecutor David Cason.
Johnson, who died of blunt force trauma to her head, was found in her home the afternoon of May 3 after the 73-year-old tax collector failed to show up for work.
Brooks, the father of Johnson’s granddaughter-in-law, was arrested on June 11.
He is being held in the Ashley County jail.
