A 14-year-old boy was shot in the chest Thursday afternoon in what was reported as an accidental, self-inflicted shooting, according to a news release from the Drew County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting occurred at a residence on Arkansas 35, east of Monticello, where the boy was “alert and responsive.” He indicated that he was looking at the gun and it accidentally fired, according to the news release.
The boy was transported by ambulance to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock and was in stable condition at the time of the news release.
The boy’s mother, stepfather, and grandmother were present at the home when the gun discharged. The investigation is ongoing, according to Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober.
