Charles Raymond Day, Sr., 80, of McGehee, went to be with the Lord on January 27, 2018 in McGehee.
He was born on August 17, 1937, in Lake Village to Gladys Wynoma McCowen Day and the late Clarence William Day.
Mr. Day was a graduate of Tillar High School and a lifelong Desha County cotton farmer, retiring in 2016 after sixty years. His love of the land inspired his three sons and two grandsons to a life of farming. In 1968, the Day family was the Desha County Farm Family of the Year.
Mr. Day was also part owner and manager of the local John Deere dealership (Valley Implement Company) for more than fifteen years.
Mr. Day loved to play the guitar and sing, indulging his love of Elvis Presley. He also enjoyed playing golf and sketching. A lifelong Baptist, Mr. Day was a song leader at Tillar Baptist Church during his youth and early parenthood, continuing as needed with music after moving to McGehee in 1968. At First Baptist Church of McGehee, he served as a deacon as well as a Sunday school teacher. He also served on numerous civic, religious, and agricultural committees.
Other than his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Day, Leroy Day, and Danny Day, Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Sherland Day of McGehee; his mother, Wynoma Day of Dumas; sons, Chuck (Marjorie) Day of McGehee, Mark (Denise) Day of McGehee, Gregg (Paige) Day of Little Rock, and Mike (Jackie) Sherland of Ridgewood, NJ; daughters, Marcy (Bryan) Smith of Newport and Sarah Jane (Mitchell) Thiele of Fort Smith; brothers, David Day of Dumas, William Day of Winchester and Rickey Day of Dumas; and sister, Sue Wood of Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was the beloved Poppa of 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 29 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 30 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in McGehee with Dr. Ed Balducci and Rev. Rick Miller officiating. Burial will be at Tillar Cemetery in Tillar.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Day, Dustin Day, Aaron Keller, Danny Ditmanson, Michael Hyatt, Jayson Sandine, Mark Mitchell Thiele, and Garrett Smith.
