Charlotte Schexnayder, longtime co-owner of the Dumas Clarion and a former state lawmaker, died Friday. She was 96.
Schexnayder and her late husband, Melvin, owned the Dumas Clarion for 44 years. She served in the Arkansas Legislature for 14 years.
She was the first female president of the National Newspaper Association, Little Rock chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Arkansas Press Association.
As a lawmaker, she focused on rural development and Southeast Arkansas. Her first bill was for a compact to build a Mississippi River Bridge from Desha County to Bolivar County, Mississippi.
Last year, Schexnayder was inducted into the Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame.
In 2012, as part of the Clinton School Speaker Series, Schexnayder discussed her memoir, “Salty Old Editor: An Adventure in Ink.”
