Eddie Cheatham, a sitting state representative from Crossett, received 4,160 votes in his bid for the Democratic nomination for the District 26 State Senate seat currently held by term-limited Jimmy Jeffress, D-Crossett, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a runoff Gregg Reep, the second-place finisher in the 3-man race.
Cheatham received 36 percent of the vote, Reep received 35 percent of the vote and Johnnie Bolin received 28 percent of the vote.
Cheatham carried Ashley and Chicot counties while Reep, a former state representative from Warren, carried Bradley, Cleveland, Desha and Drew counties. Johnnie Bolin, a former state representative from Crossett, carried Lincoln County.
Cheatham and Reep will face each other again on June 12 in the run-off for the Democratic nomination. The nominee will then face Republican Mike Akin, a Monticello businessman who currently serves as chairman of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, in the November General Election.
The complete, unofficial district-wide results:
Eddie Cheatham – 4,160
Gregg Reep – 4,056
Johnnie Bolin – 3,240
Akin was unopposed for the Republican nomination.
