Eddie Cheatham

Southeast Arkansas Democrats gave State Rep. Eddie Cheatham the nod Tuesday night in his runoff with former State Rep. Gregg Reep for the Democratic nomination for District 26 State Senator. Cheatham, of Crossett, received 54 percent of the vote, carrying three of the counties in the 7-county district.

Cheatham carried Ashley, Chicot, and Lincoln counties while Reep, of Warren, carried Bradley, Cleveland, Desha and Drew counties.

Cheatham received 58 percent of the vote in Chicot County and 51 percent of the vote in Lincoln County but it was his big numbers in Ashley County, his home county, that put him over the top. He received 86 percent of the 2,321 votes cast in Ashley County where there was also runoff for county judge on the ballot.

Reep received 74 percent of the 798 votes cast in his home county, the less populous Bradley County where there were no local races on the ballot. He received 68 percent in Cleveland County, 64 percent in Drew County, and 56 percent in Desha County.

During the runoff campaign, Cheatham and Reep both touted tax cut bills they co-sponsored while serving in the state legislature and campaign endorsements they received from various groups. Cheatham received endorsements from the Arkansas Education Association and the Arkansas AFL-CIO. Reep was endorsed by the National Rifle Association.

Cheatham will face Monticello businessman Mike Akin in the November general election. Akin was unopposed in his bid for the Republican nomination.
