Coleman “Pete” Matthews, 65, of Hamburg, died July 29, 2014 at his residence.
Mr. Matthews was a native of Portland and a resident of Hamburg for the past 43 years. He was a forester and worked for Georgia-Pacific Forestry and later Plum Creek Timber Company for 39 years.
He was a member of the Aulds Baptist Church and the Weatherly Hunting Club. He was an avid horseman, hunter and fisherman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Coleman C. & Bernice Brown Matthews and a daughter-in-law, Belinda Lephiew Matthews.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eunice Lawson Matthews; three sons, Coleman Matthews and wife, Gail, James Matthews and wife, Stephanie, all of Hamburg and Donald Matthews of Crossett; two sisters, Connie Gaskill of Summerville, South Carolina and Barbara Owens of Hector; four grandchildren, Peyten McNeice, Noland Matthews, Logan Matthews and Hayden Matthews, one great-grandchild, Kyle McNeice; several nieces, nephews and a host of cousins.
Graveside funeral services and burial will be held July 31 at 10 a.m. at the Portland Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Bates officiating.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Weatherly Hunting Club.
