Drew County Circuit Clerk Pat Savage recently was awarded a $20,000 grant from the state Automated Records System Fund for automation or preservation of the county’s real estate records. It was the only grant awarded in Southeast Arkansas.
The grant is funded through funds paid by the 10 Class 6 and Class 7 counties in Arkansas. One dollar from each document recorded in those counties goes into the fund for distribution to the Class 1 through Class 5 counties. The circuit clerks from the Class 1 through Class 5 counties apply for the grants which are distributed upon consideration by the circuit clerks of the from the Class 6 and Class 7 counties. This year, there were applications for more than $800,000. The committee had about $310,000 available for grants.
Some of the grants that were awarded were for complete land management computer systems, hardware, software, scanning and indexing of the real estate records. So far, the fund has paid out more than $1.3 million since its creation by the state Legislature in 2007.
