The archeological and written evidence of Hernando de Soto’s route through Arkansas will be the August program at Lakeport Plantation’s  history discussion next week.

Dr. Jeff Mitchem , an Arkansas Archeological Survey archeologist, will present “Hernando de Soto’s Route through Arkansas: What’s the Evidence?” on August 22.

De Soto died during the expedition, after nearly a year in Arkansas, on May 31, 1542 at Guachoya. Guachoya is believed by archeologists and historians to be near present-day Lake Village.

Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the discussion begins at 6 p.m. at the Lakeport Plantation located at 601 Highway 142 in Lake Village.

Lakeport Legacies is a monthly history talk at the Lakeport Plantation. Each month a topic from the Delta region is featured. The event is free and open to the public.
