graphDrew County is the only county in Southeast Arkansas showing population growth since the 2010 census, according to recently released U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.

Seark Today reviewed the population estimates of seven Southeast Arkansas counties – Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Cleveland, Desha, Drew, Jefferson and Lincoln counties – and discovered only Drew showed an increase since the 2010 census.

The reports indicate Drew County’s population increased by 1.5 percent, from 18,509 to 18,785 or 276 residents.

Drew County’s population trend is in line with the state’s which is also showing a 1.5 percent increase, from 2,915,918 to 2,959,373.

But other Southeast Arkansas counties have not fared as well, according to the reports.

Based on the estimated population loss percentage from 2010 through the first six months of 2013, Jefferson County was the biggest loser, followed by Desha and Chicot counties.

Jefferson County is showing a loss of 4,244 residents or 5.5 percent; Desha County shows a loss of 503 residents or 3.9 percent; and Chicot County shows a loss of 465 residents, also 3.9 percent.

Other population losers were Ashley County with an 2.6 percent population loss, Bradley County with a 2.3 percent loss, Cleveland County with a 1.1 percent loss, and Lincoln County with a slight dip of 0.7 percent.

In comparison, the two counties in extreme Northwest Arkansas counties are still showing considerable growth. Benton County’s population is up 7.2 percent from 2010 and Washington County’s population is up 6.6 percent from 2010 while the population in the surrounding Northwest Arkansas counties remains relatively stable with slight gains and dips.
