A Dermott man initially believed to be a wounded victim in the Sunday morning shooting at Monticello that left two people dead has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Lavar Thompson, 38, of Dermott, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Little Rock by agents with the U.S. Marshals Service. He is suspected in the shooting deaths of Jeremiah Jones, 37, who was found dead inside a car not far from 120 South Chester Street, and Shalonda Binns, 37, who was found dead inside the residence.

Both appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds. Thompson, who was also at the Chester Street address, had sustained a gunshot wound as well, according to State Police.

“(Thompson) was initially believed to have been a victim in the incident until during the investigation he was developed as a suspect,” Monticello Police Chief Eddy Deaton said in a Tuesday afternoon news release. “Baptist Hospital was contacted and they had released him shortly before our call to them.”

Deaton said the U.S. Marshal Service was contacted to assist in the apprehension of Thompson who will be transported to Drew County where he will be interviewed by Arkansas State Police and Monticello police detectives.
