Dermott community members and Dermott High School’s journalism class recently read to the school district’s elementary school students in the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” and Renaissance Learning’s “Read the Most from Coast to Coast” programs.

The elementary school students also read and took quizzes, passing 710 of those quizzes with 80 to 100 percent efficiency. They read 907 books in one day and for every quiz they took they received an award.

Their names also went into a drawing for Family Dollar gift cards and bicycles.

Donors included the Dermott Education Association, First Service Bank, Simmon Bank of Dermott, Alice-Sidney Dryer and Seed Company, Dermott Chamber of Commerce, Walmart of McGehee, and Andy Brannon with Farm Bureau.
