Derrick Sims is once again embracing his South Arkansas roots with his latest project, The Perfect Host: A Southern Gothic Tale. The feature-length film will be filmed at Monticello’s Allen House and the surrounding town.
The Allen House, a 1906 mansion located on North Main Street in Monticello, Arkansas, has been the subject of speculation, intrigue, ghost stories and odd goings-on for more than 60 years.
It was featured on numerous paranormal investigator shows including the Biography Channel’s My Ghost Story, the Discovery Channel’s A Haunting and The SciFi Channel’s Paranormal Witness and Ghost Hunters. It is also the subject of two novels, A Haunted Love Story by the house’s current owner, Mark Spencer and The Scent of Lilacs, a 1966 gothic novel by Monticello native Carolyn Wilson. The house also inspired a painting by Arkansas artist Daniel Coston, a Monticello native.
Sims’ The Perfect Host: A Southern Gothic Tale is the story of a woman who returned, after many years, to her childhood home to bury her grandmother. While there, the woman and her daughter set up temporary residence in the Allen House. There is something odd about the elderly homeowners, but something even more peculiar about the property. The woman soon begins to unearth its history and finds the Allen House may contain something far more sinister than her elderly hosts.
Sims’ production company, Fabled Motion Pictures, is scheduled to begin filming the motion picture in January 2016. For more information about Sims, read Seark Today’s 2011 interview with the director.
In cooperation with the Monticello Economic Development Commission, the City of Monticello is working with Fabled Motion Pictures to provide logistical support for the production. The project will employ at least 30-50 Arkansas crew members, local actors and extras, according to a news release from the city.
The film’s producers are currently fundraising with private investors and GoFundMe.com. There will be some exclusive “perks” for those who donate through GoFundMe.com.
A fundraising teaser trailer was filmed this summer at the Allen House and can be viewed above and on the film’s crowdfunding page gofundme.com/ThePerfectHost. Anyone interested in investing in the film can request an investor package by e-mailing [email protected]
