Doyle K. Gates, 94, of Hermitage, died on July 27, 2017 at St. Vincent’s Infirmary in Little Rock.

He was a farmer and a commercial fisherman on the Ouachita River. He was a fierce crappie fisherman and enjoyed taking his family and friends to Greens Lake and Pereogeethe Lake where he spent his life fishing. He also enjoyed turkey and deer hunting and did so until this past hunting season.

Mr. Gates was a Christian and served in the Navy. He was educated in the school house at Marsden where he would ride his bicycle miles to school with his sister, Ardie Bea on the back. He graduated from Hermitage High School.

Mr. Gates was born on April 29, 1923 in Farmville and was the son of the late Qunnie E. Gates and Zola Bea Grider Gates.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his brothers, Oran “Duce” Gates, Elbert Gates, Carl Gates; his sister, Ardie Bea Gates Green; and two nephews, David Green and Steve Hutsebout.

He is survived by his brother R. L. Gates of Warren; his nieces and nephews, David and Regina Gorman of Monticello, Keith Gates of Warren, Barbara Kay and Tom Boyer, Atlanta, Georgia, Beverley Hutsebout of Atlanta, Georgia, Sue Green and Karen Green both of Valparaiso, Indiana and Nahoko Green of Illinois.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at Frazer’s Funeral Home in Warren. Burial will be at the Gravelridge Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, July 30 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Frazer’s Funeral Home.
