Members of the Drew County Democratic Party Central Committee will meet on June 13 to select their nominee for the Ward 4, Position 2 seat on the Monticello City Council.
The party’s nominee, the late Dr. Tim Chase, died three weeks after the March 1 primary when he won the nomination with 63 percent of the vote.
The two-year term begins on January 1, 2017. No Republican filed for the office.
The committee met Monday night to determine how it would proceed in selecting its nominee for the November General Election ballot.
Committee member Arlene Russell made a motion that the committee delay its decision until June 13 so that the public could be informed prior to any action.
Committee member Beverly Burks seconded Russell’s motion, saying it seemed to her that it would only be fair to give prior notice so that anyone interested in seeking the nomination would have the opportunity to attend the meeting. The meeting will be held at the Drew County Courthouse on June 13 at 6 p.m.
Anyone interested in the position should contact the Drew County Democratic Party Central Committee Chairman Damon Lampkin at 723-3084.
Paige Chase, the widow of the late Dr. Tim Chase, has announced her intention to seek the office. She is currently serving Dr. Chase’s unexpired term which ends on December 31, 2016. She attended Monday night’s committee meeting.
