The 27th Annual Drew County Martin Luther King Jr. celebration concludes Monday night with a service at the Revival Center Church of God in Christ, located at 311 S. Pine Street, in Monticello. The theme is “The Journey. . . Moving Forward.” The service begins at 6 p.m.
Rickey Hicks, a Little Rock attorney, will be the guest speaker. Hicks graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a Juris Doctorate degree. The owner of The Hicks Law Firm of Little Rock, Hicks specializes in civil rights, contract negotiation, and venture capital funding. He serves as a political advisor, campaign strategist, policy advisor, and public relations advisor to key public figures including form President Bill Clinton, former Gov. Jim Guy Tucker, Martin Luther King III, President Bashir of Sudan, and others.
As a businessman, community leader and the pastor of Rufus K. Young Christian Church in Little Rock, Hicks has served on numerous boards and is the recipient of humanitarian awards for his service to the nation and the state of Arkansas.
Providing the music for the celebration will be Josh Frost, of Monticello, and the MLK Jr. Youth Community Choir, directed by Clarissa Pace. Dramatizations will be performed by Jada Cooks of Crossett and the MLK Youth Drama team directed by Tira Jones. Jackie Underhill of Monticello will serve as the guest mistress of ceremony.
Rev. D. Buffington, chairman of the committee, welcomes everyone from the community to participate. Drew County MLK Jr. Committee members include Buffington, chairman; Pace, co-chairman; and Dr. Bettye Gragg, Rosemary Brown-Britton, Tira Jones, Linda Bassett-Johnson, and Joe Williams.
