U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor will be the keynote speaker at the annual Drew County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 20. The celebration will be held at the Revival Center Church of God in Christ in Monticello and services will begin at 6 p.m. The theme is “We Shall Not Be Moved.”
Sen. Pryor, D-Ark., is the senior senator from Arkansas, serving since 2003. A former Arkansas attorney general, he was born in Fayetteville and graduated from Walt Whitman High School in Maryland in 1981. He graduated from the University of Fayetteville in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in history and went on to receive a law degree from the university’s law school in 1988.
The Drew County NAACP, host of the event, will honor Louis Dunlap, Carolyn Robinson and Gaynell Jamison, for their dedicated service to Drew County.
The Trinity Full Gospel Ministries youth praise dance team, Chosen Generation, Clarissa Pace, and the Drew County MLK Jr. Youth Community Choir will perform at the event and Bettina Gragg Randolph will present a dramatic interpretation.
Mae Simpson, retired long-time Monticello library director, will serve as mistress of ceremonies and Rev. D.L. Buffington is chairman of the program committee. Other program committee members are Clarissa Pace, co-chairperson; JoAnn Trotter, Angelia Anderson, Joe Williams, Linda Bassett Johnson and Bettina Gragg Randolph.
Buffington invites the entire community to attend the event. The church is located at 311 S. Pine Street.
