The Drew County NAACP will host a Youth Leadership Summit on August 5 at Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church in Monticello.
The purpose of the youth summit is to get more young people involved in ACT-SO, the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, according to a news release announcing the event.
ACT-SO is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. It includes 29 competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, visual and culinary arts. Nearly 300,000 young people have participated from the program since its inception, according to the news release.
The church is located at 527 E. McCloy in Monticello. The summit begins at 2 p.m. Registration cost is $25.00 per student. The registration deadline is July 28.
