A 21-year-old Drew County woman died following a single vehicle accident late Tuesday afternoon when she lost control of her pickup truck while crossing a steel bridge on the Green Hill-New Hope Road in southern Drew County.

Kyla Chapman, of the Lacy area, was traveling south on the Green Hill-New Hope Road, about three miles from the Old Warren Road, when her right tires left the road after crossing the bridge, according to Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober.

Her pickup truck traveled about 100 feet in the ditch on the west side of the road before she corrected, crossed the road, and went into the ditch on the east side of the road. The truck traveled about 55 feet in that ditch before it came out of the ditch and started rolling, Gober explained.

The truck rolled about four times finally coming to rest on the west side of the road.

Gober said Chapman managed to get out of the truck and was walking around when ambulance arrived but she was taken to Drew Memorial Hospital where she seemed to be doing OK.

“But things got worse and she died,” Gober said. “She obviously had internal injuries.”

Gober said he received the accident call at 4:42 p.m.
