The Dumas Bobcats (0-1) are going to have to play with a sense of urgency as they take on 3A powerhouse McGehee (1-0) at home this Friday, Coach Mark Courtney said Monday morning following the Bobcats 41-13 loss to Mayflower Friday night in their season opener on the road.
“They’ve got to trust their teammates and they’ve got to play with a sense of urgency and that’s what we didn’t do Friday night,” Courtney said. “I don’t know if it was because of all the rain distractions, all the travel distractions, first game of the year distractions, or what it was, but the team that showed up to play Friday night is not the team I’ve been practicing since July.”
Courtney said the team did not put forth a good effort Friday night. “We had a lot of standing around, we had a lot of missed assignments, and we had a lot of dead plays because the effort was so bad at times,” he said.
But he’s shouldering the blame himself.
“I told my coaches this weekend: ‘We can blame the kids if we want to but it’s just blaming because we have not taken care of our job if they make the same mistakes in practice,'” he said. “So, we’re making a push this week to practice like we play. And that’s what will happen; if we practice bad all week we’ll play bad Friday night and get beat by 40 points again.”
Courtney says he has a good football team with a lot of young talent as well as talented seniors and 99 percent of the mistakes he saw Friday night are fixable if the kids buy into it.
“McGehee, on the other hand, is McGehee,” Courtney said. “Coach Haddock is a really good friend of mine and, in my opinion, is one of the best coaches in the state. He’s going to do things right and he’s very disciplined in how he goes about it.”
If the Bobcats don’t show that same discipline Friday night it will show on the scoreboard, Courtney says.
In this video, Courtney talks about some individual players, areas that need work, and some bright spots.
