Elizabeth Louise Pflieger Pirtle, 82, of Monticello passed away April 7, 2014 at her home.
She was the salutatorian of her high school graduating class of 1950 at Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, Va. and worked at the Department of the Navy’s Intelligence Security Branch in Washington D.C.
Mrs. Pirtle was a very active member of Ladelle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and served as church treasurer for many years.
She was also involved with the Drew Central Schools reading program where she would volunteer to read to students. She also participated in the Foster Grandparent program but her greatest love was being a wife, mother, grandmother.
She was born August 27, 1931 in Washington D.C. to the late Christian Pflieger and Margaret McCain Pflieger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter James Pirtle whom she married July 18, 1953 and one sister, Diane Brown.
Survivors include one son, Donald “Donnie” Pirtle of Richmond, Texas; two daughters, Karen Moellenberndt and husband David of Warren and Laurie Sivils of Monticello; one brother, James Christian Pflieger and wife Marina of Alexandria, Va.; seven grandchildren, Michelle Hoover, Amanda Cowan, Jessica Vesecky, J.J. Sivils, Rebecca Pirtle, Christina Pirtle and Alexandra Pirtle; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held April 9 at 4 p.m. at Stephenson Dearman Funeral Home in Monticello. Burial will be at Lone Sassafrass Cemetery on Midway Route in Drew County.
Visitation will be April 8 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
