Big band jazz from the 1930’s to the present will be performed by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s three jazz bands during a concert Thursday, October 30 at 7 p.m., in the UAM Fine Arts Center.
UAM’s Jazz Band I will perform selections ranging from the 1935 ColePorter tune “Begin the Beguine” to “Can’t Buy Me Love” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The band is under the direction of Gary Meggs.
Jazz Band I has developed an international reputation after a two-week performance tour of the People’s Republic of China last spring.
Jazz Band II will perform a variety of big band scores, including Frank Mantooth’s arrangement of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” as well as Mark Taylor’s arrangement of the 1933 hit “Yesterdays” with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Otto Harbach. The band is conducted by C.E. Askew.
Jazz Band III will present Bennie Moten’s 1932 jazz standard “Moten Swing” and ‘Harlem Nocturne,” a classic written by Earle Hagen and Dick Rogers in 1939. The band is directed by John Webb.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
