Fine Arts StudentsStar City School District Fine Arts students from the choir, band, and visual arts programs at Star City High School, Star City Middle School, and Jimmy Brown Elementary School were recently showcased at the high school as part of the district’s second annual Fine Arts Extravaganza. The Fine Arts Extravaganza included the 2014 Blue Bulldog Art Exhibit sponsored by the Star City High School Art Club which featured artwork created by Star City School District students in kindergarten through the 12th grade created under the supervision of district art teachers Suzi Davis (elementary), Jill Moore (middle school), and Roger Darren High (high school).  First, second, and third place awards were presented in thirteen divisions for exemplary work.

Following the art exhibition and presentation of art awards, a recital of small ensembles and soloists was presented featuring performances by members of the middle school choir, middle school band, high school choir, and high school band.

The 8th and 9th grade ladies chorus performed the song “Coming Home” followed by the 6th and 7th grade honor choir singing “My Dear Companion”. Both groups were under the direction of choir director Deupree Kelly.

The program included piano solos by Lauren Brown, fourth grade; Mikayla Connor, ninth grade; Graci Morgan, fourth grade; and Madison Burr, seventh grade.

Sixth grade alto saxophone players Maggie Mann and Tano Tatum performed “Polovina Pyatova”, an original composition by middle school band director Leah Jones.

The sixth grade flute ensemble featuring Jaliyah Brown, Patricia Dehart, Kaylee Eifling, Takaishiana Lawson, Madyson Massey, Karla Mejia, and Jillian Rauls performed “A Walk in the Park”.

The eighth grade percussion ensemble consisting of Johnathan Brandon, Malik Deloach, Jonathan Hibbard, McKenzie Lewis, Teyonna Slater, and David Wilcox performed “Variations on a Rhythmic Theme”.

The sixth grade clarinet ensemble, Ky’lesha Ashley, Rayvin Callaway, Paige Chandler, Rosalyn Donham, Tayelor Johnson, Christyne Mays, Savannah Morgan, Alexis Roper, Jemmie Stephens, Maria Thayer, Amber West, and Jay’myia Williams, performed “Courtly Dance”.

The seventh grade brass quintet comprised of Scott Glover, Jordan Lee, Marshall Morgan, Justin Rudder, and Garret Walls performed “Baroque Festival”.

Seventh grade student Olivia Reed and fourth grade student Briar Thompson performed “Oh, the Things You Can Think” from “Seussical, the Musical”.

Sophomore Samantha Branson danced to “Troublemaker”, while senior Haley Donaldson performed an interpretive dance to “Fire Burning”.

The evening concluded with a solo vocal performance by seventh grade vocalist Ryan Davis singing “What Love is This”.

“I am very proud of everyone who participated in this event,” said John Wilkerson, director of bands for the Star City School District.

The faculty plan to continue this annual event, and anticipate even more participants in next year’s extravaganza.
