No employees, customers or firefighters were injured in the Friday afternoon fire at the EZ Mart convenience store on U.S. 425 South in Monticello but Monticello Fire Chief Kelly Reid believes the building is a total loss.

The fire started shortly before 5 p.m. in the southeast corner of the building in a room where the store’s cooler is located, according to Reid.

The blaze was extinguished by 5:30 p.m. but at 6 p.m. firefighters were still inside hosing the interior where the pungent smell of charred merchandise and plastic filled the air

Reid said he doesn’t yet know what caused the fire.
