Tyrone Smith, a patient service technician at Drew Memorial Hospital, was selected as the hospital’s 2011 Hero of the Year, a program that recognizes hospital employees who go above and beyond the call of duty in their service to patients.
Smith, who is frequently commended by patients for his excellent care and positive, upbeat attitude, purchased with his own personal funds basic personal hygiene items for patients to assist them in their transition back home.
His generosity and cheerful disposition did not go unnoticed by his employer. Drew Memorial Hospital chief executive officer Mike Layfield presented Smith with an engraved plaque, a check for $600 and a fleece pullover.
“Tyrone exemplifies the caring attitude and cheerful disposition that has helped Drew Memorial Hospital become a leader in the health care industry,” said Keith Vandee, Drew Memorial Hospital human resources director.
