Gilmer “Redd” Whittington, 81, of Eudora, passed away on May 16, 2019.
A graduate of Eudora High School, Mr. Whittington was a cattleman through and through, working as cowboy for over 63 years. He married Martha Ann Mardis in 1959.
As a boy, Gilmer started working as a hand at the sale barn and eventually owned and operated Eudora Livestock Auction with his two sons. During this time and even afterwards, he traveled all over Arklansas Louisiana and Mississippi working cattle and was known as a local “vet” because he was trained by Doc Bilberry early in his life. Anyone who knew Gilmer knows he dearly loved hard work and instilled that same work ethic into his family and those who worked for him over the years.
Other than working, Gilmer loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed singing at church; he was a member at Lakeside Baptist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana.
Gilmer was a giving, selfless man who left a legacy ingrained into an innumerable amount of people.
He was born on March 10, 1938 in Eudora to the late James A. and Epsy McCullough Whittington.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Wray Whittington; brothers, Robert Whittington and Alva Whittington; sisters, Daisy Whittington, Alice Berry and Thelma Chambers; adopted son, David Prince.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Whittington of Eudora; his son, Bryan (Lori) Whittington of Oak Grove, Louisiana; adopted sons, Dale McBride and George Yelvington; brother, James “Sonny” (Julia) Whittington of Bastrop, Louisiana; sisters, Ruby Hopkins of Jacksonville, Florida, Epsie Sugg of Sherwood, Georgia Ball of Hot Springs, Polly (Billy) Landers of Jonesboro and Vicki (Jim) Childers of West Monroe, Louisiana; grandchildren, Logan (Clark) Strange and Lara Beth (Justin) Harper; great-grandchildren, Eliza Strange, Brooks Strange, Viviana Harper and Georgia Kate Harper.
