Gladys “May Dell” Shannon, 93, of Lake Village died January 4, 2014.

She was born November 9, 1920 at Lake Village and was the daughter of the late was James Griffin and Alberta Harris-Griffin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her her brother, J.D. Griffin; sister, Ceola Griffin; and her husband, Myles Shannon.

Mrs. Shannon’s religious experiences began at an early age at Marilyn Greenland Baptist Church. She remained a standing member of Greenland Baptist Church and faithful to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ until her departure. From across the lake, she would catch the ferry to attend Central school. She left Lake Village and moved to Texas. Later, she moved to Chicago in the early 1960s and worked for Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital until she retired. She returned to Lake Village in the 1980s and remained there until her death. She was an avid reader.

Survivors include one son, Charlie Woodard (Sarah) of Chicago; two brothers, Billy Griffin and Michael Griffin (Kathy); three grandchildren, Darla Woodard, Nichola Howard and Derrick Woodard, all of Chicago, five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two nieces, Ruby Griffin (Lee) of Greenville, Miss. and Berta Hamblin of Calif., a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held January 11 from 10 a.m. until 11a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Lake Village. Funeral services will begin at 11a.m. at the church following visitation, with Rev. Ceaser Paul King officiating.

Burial will be at Little Greenland Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service of Lake Village.
