WilmotThe Hamburg School Board on Monday unanimously approved Superintendent Max Dyson’s recommendation to close the Wilmot Elementary School campus, effective July 1.

Students may attend either Portland Elementary or Noble/Allbritton Elementary.

The closure is the result of declining enrollments. Enrollment dropped from 54 to 42 over the last year, resulting in teachers teaching several grades, Dyson said in a recent interview.

He said it was his opinion as well as others that it was not in the best interest of the students to keep the Wilmot Elementary School open.

The school has eight to 10 employees, including three teachers. If the school closes, those employees will continue to be employed by the Hamburg School District, according to Dyson.

The board also agreed to keep the Wilmot gymnasium and the cafeteria operational for one year in the event of a summer school or a summer meal program. A decision about what to do with the campus will be made on or before July 1, 2015.
