The Hamburg School District has scheduled a November 18 meeting to hear comments from the parents of Wilmot Elementary School students about the possible closure of the school.

The meeting is set for 5 p.m. at Portland Elementary School.

If the closure is approved, students would have the option to attend either the Portland Elementary School or the Noble-Allbritton Elementary School at Hamburg, according to Max Dyson, superintendent of the Hamburg School District.

Dyson said it is his opinion as well as others’ that it is not in the best interest of the students to keep the Wilmot Elementary School open.

Due to the small enrollment, teachers are teaching several grades. Enrollment dropped from 54 to 42 over the last year.

The school has eight to 10 employees, including three teachers. If the school closes, those employees will continue to be employed by the Hamburg School District, according to Dyson.
