Herbert Donald “Don” Smith, 71, of Dumas passed away on March 9, 2017 in Dumas.
He was born on November 28, 1945 in Yell County and was the son of the late Lawton and Nora Smith.
He was in law enforcement for 35 years. He was a Master Mason Omega Lodge # 547, a member of Arkansas Sheriffs Association and a past president of Southeast Arkansas Peace Officer Association. He served on the council of South Arkansas Economic Development District, was active in the Arkansas Sheriffs Boys & Girls Ranch and served on the Desha County Child Abuse Council. In 1999 he was elected President of Arkansas Sheriffs Association and in 1994 he was honored for his participation in a drug and safety program. He was chairman of the State Bail Bonds Board for 12 years and served as Desha County Deputy Coroner four years.
Mr. Smith enjoyed his coffee shop friends at Cash’s, his time serving as the sheriff of Desha County, and loved his many friends. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death also by his brother, Daniel “JR” Smith and two sisters, Jewel Conrad and Eva Richmond.
Survivors are his wife of 50 years, Mary Smith of Dumas; a daughter, Rhonda (Lee) Tillman of Star City; four sisters, Jean Israel of Dumas, Ruby Jones of St. Louis, Missouri, Mary Hudgins of Heber Springs, and Sue (Dave) Miller of Conway; two grandchildren, Kari Tarlton and Kyle Tarlton and one great grandchild, Zoie Tarlton.
Visitation is Saturday, March 11, from 5-7 p.m. at Griffin Funeral Home in Dumas.
Services will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Hilburn, Rev. Dubs Byers and Roger Milligan officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Cemetery.
