The Chicot County Sheriff’s Office and State Police are pursuing a number of leads in the death of Chicot County Tax Collector Nell Johnson who was found in her home Thursday afternoon with blunt force trauma to her head, according to Chicot County Sheriff Ron Nichols.
Johnson’s brother Harvey found the 73-year-old woman at her Lake Village home on Highway 82 at about 1 p.m. when he went to check on her after she failed to show up for work.
Her body has been sent to the state Crime Lab where the state Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death. She is believed to have died sometime between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Thursday, according to Nichols.
Investigators are looking into a number of leads including one report that transient panhandlers were seen in the area on Thursday, Nichols said.
“We have some good leads in the case,” he said, adding that both the Chicot County Sheriff’s Office and the State Police are investigating the homicide.
Johnson, who was seeking reelection to another term in office, had served as Chicot County Tax Collector for eight or 10 years, according to Nichols.
