James R. Smith, 85, of Crossett passed away on January 5, 2014 in Crossett.
Mr. Smith was a member of Pine Forest Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired millwright at Georgia Pacific. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry and hunting.
He was born December 15, 1928 in Lamar County, Ala. and was the son of the late Frances Marion and Donnie Rebecca Palmer Smith.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy F. Stanley Smith, whom he cared for the last 13 years of her life as she battled Alzheimer’s. He was also preceded in death by 11 siblings.
Survivors include four children; Fran (Barry) Bagley of Harvest, Ala., Billy Smith, Bobby (Lynette) Smith and Mike (Mandy) Smith, all of Crossett; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held January 7 at 10 a.m. at Pine Forest Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie DuBose and Rev. Don Justice officiating. Interment will follow at Simms Cemetery in Crossett under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Vickie McCarty for her endless devotion caring for Dad. They also would like to thank Ashley County Medical Center Home Health, Ashley County Medical Center, Dr. Gresham and Dr. Malik. Also, a special thanks to Pine Forest Church for the numerous visits and to Samantha Webb who visited him at Ashely County Medical Center. Mr. Smith’s children would like to give a very special thanks to their brother Mike for taking care of him for the last four years.
