Katie Jean Lyle Blake, 82 of Star City, passed away August 29, 2021 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff.
Born at Star City on April 10, 1939, she was a daughter of the late W. D. “Shorty” Lyle and Virginia Nell Fullbright Lyle.
She was a 1957 graduate from Star City High School. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello) on December 19, 1970. She was in the last graduating class when UAM was known as Arkansas A&M College. She received a master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville on May 11, 1991.
She was a first grade teacher for over 40 years, beginning at Glendale School in August 1969 until the Glendale School consolidated with Star City School District in 1984. She retired June 30, 2009. This school always remained a warm spot in her heart. She always felt the students, community members and teachers had a special bond.
She was reared in the First Baptist Church at Star City and baptized into that faith. She married in this same church on Friday, June 17, 1960. She later became a member of Cornerville Missionary Baptist Church in Cornerville, from August 20, 1967 to April 13, 1995. She became a member of Prosperity United Methodist Church in Pansy on April 13, 1995, where she served as organist.
She was initiated into Mill Creek Chapter #612, Order of the Eastern Star at Herbine on March 20, 1969 and served as Worthy Matron in 1984. She was a member of Eureka Chapter Order of the Eastern Star with dual membership in Star Chapter #608 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the John McAlmont Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Pine Bluff.
She served as a Justice of the Peace on the Lincoln County Quorum Court for eight years and as the Lincoln County representative to Arkansas Quorum Court Members Association for six years. She was a member of the Arkansas Retired Educators Association and National Educators Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W. D. “Shorty” Lyle and Virginia Nell Fullbright Lyle; a dear aunt, Mrs. Anna Lee “E” Fullbright Blythe; and special friend of many years, Linda Beth Crowder Kervin.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Vernon Blake of Star City; two sons, Johnathan “Spanky” (Julie) Blake of Star City and Vernon Lyle (Tammy) Blake of Morrilton; brother, W. D. “Mickey” Lyle, Jr. of Grapevine, Texas; and a granddaughter, Kimberlee Anne Koonce of Pine Bluff. She is also survived by long-time friend, Bill Kervin.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 1, at 2 p.m. at Leek Cemetery with Bro. Boyd Savage, Bro. Randall Baker and Randy Barrett officiating. Visitation is Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Kervin, Bo Kervin, Randy Barrett, John L. Reed, Doyle “Buddy” Cheshier, Kenneth Brockman, Wayne Jordan, Jason Barrett, Johnathan Barrett, Jack Cheshier, and former and retired teachers from Jimmy Brown Elementary School and Glendale School.
