Kittie Spencer Hoofman, 98, of Texarkana, Texas, formerly of Monticello, died on July 15, 2018 in Texarkana.
She was born on January 27, 1920 at Ladelle (Drew County) and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spencer.
Mr. Hoofman was a graduate of Drew Central High School and Monticello Business College. She went to work in the office of the Monticello Cotton Mills in 1940 and married William H. “Bill” Hoofman on March 1, 1941. Mr. Hoofman joined the U.S. Air Force in April 1942 and served with the Eighth Air Force until December 1945.
During the time her husband was serving in the Air Force in World War II, Mrs. Hoofman joined him in Sacramento, California where he was stationed at Mather Air Force Base. She worked at Mather Air Force Base in the finance department until Mr. Hoofman was transferred to the state of Washington, where she joined him until he was to be transferred for overseas service.
Mrs. Hoofman returned to Monticello in the fall of 1942 and lived there until Mr. Hoofman’s return from the war. She lived and worked at different jobs in Monticello until her husband returned from the war in December 1945. The couple had two sons and moved to Conway in 1956. While living in Conway, Mrs. Hoofman worked at Arkansas Teachers College (now UCA), until returning to Monticello in 1966.
In 1967, Mrs. Hoofman went to work for Arkansas A & M College (now UAM). She worked there until retiring from the UAM Chancellor’s Office in on June 30, 1990. After retiring, she served as the treasurer for the Drew County Historical Society and Museum for 14 years in Monticello. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Monticello and the Colonel David Love Chapter of the DAR.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hoofman was preceded in death by a son, Spencer Hoofman; two brothers, Jack L. Spencer, Jr. and Ray Kimbrough; and a sister, Marie Farrer.
She is survived by son, William E. Hoofman and wife Susie of Texarkana; a grandson, John Aaron Hoofman and wife Meagan of Texarkana; great-grandchildren, Clovie Ruth, Simon Ollie and Abram Gunner; a step granddaughter, Haley Suzanne Cook and husband Cody of Texarkana; great-granddaughter, Haislee Suzanne Cook; one sister, Jean Spencer Wilks of Malvern; five nephews and numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 18 at 11 a.m. at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home in Monticello. Burial will be at Lacey Cemetery in Drew County. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 17 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
