A Lake Village man was arrested Monday in connection with the May 3 beating death of Chicot County Tax Collector Nell Johnson.
John Thomas Brooks, 49, was arrested by State Police and Chicot County Sheriff Ron Nichols Monday morning on suspicion of capital murder, according to Nichols.
Brooks is the father of Johnson’s granddaughter-in-law, who once worked in the collector’s office, Nichols said.
The arrest warrant was based on DNA evidence and robbery is the suspected motive in the murder, according to Nichols.
Johnson, who died of blunt force trauma to her head, was found in her home the afternoon of May 3 after the 73-year-old tax collector failed to show up for work, according to Nichols.
Brooks is being held without bond at the Ashley County Detention Center.
