The Red Cross will conduct lifeguarding classes in Monticello on April 30 and May 1 at 519 Glenwood Drive in Vivian Manor (the church on the hill). Classes will be held from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The cost of the lifeguard course is $170 without books. The material can be downloaded online or purchased at the Red Cross web site.

The lifeguard course includes CPR, AED, and first aid.

CPR/AED for the professional rescuer is $85. This is included in the lifeguard course but some may only need to recertify in CPR/AED.

Water skills and assessments will be conducted at the city pool. The date and time of those assessments will be announced.

Must be at least 15 years old

Must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
-Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back is not allowed.
-Swim goggles may be used.

Must tread water for two minutes using only the legs.

Complete a timed event within one minute and 40 seconds.
– Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
– Surface dive, feet-first or head-first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, to retrieve a 10-pound object.
-Return to the surface and swim 20 years on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.
– Exit the water without using a ladder.
