State Police are investigating a Saturday afternoon incident in which a man died after he was tased during an assault on a police officer, according to information provided in a news release from the Monticello Police Department. Neither the name of the deceased nor the police officer was disclosed in the news release.
The police officer was dispatched Saturday around 2 p.m. to a domestic violence complaint at Turtle Creek apartments on Slemmons Street in Monticello.
When the officer arrived, he began talking to the couple involved. A short time later, the man became irate and the officer reached for the man’s arm to place him in handcuffs. The man then turned and grabbed the officer by the neck. Both the man and the officer “went to the floor” with the man landing on top of the officer, according to the news release.
“After a short scuffle, the officer was able to get his Taser and deploy one cycle to stop the assault,” the news release reads. “The officer noticed the man’s breathing was abnormal, so he immediately called for an ambulance. The subject was taken to Drew Memorial Hospital and passed away about an hour later.”
The incident was captured on the officer’s body camera and witnessed by another person in the room, according to the news release. The Arkansas State Police is conducting the investigation.
