Mark Spencer, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and his wife, Rebecca, have been selected by the Arkansas Reading Association to receive the Community Leader Literacy Award.
The Spencers received the award for opening their historic home on North Main Street to school groups and book clubs for tours and talks related to Mark Spencer’s book A Haunted Love Story: The Ghosts of the Allen House.
The Spencers have hosted students from Drew Central, Hamburg and Star City and Mark Spencer has given presentations at schools, civic organization meetings and book club meetings over the past year in Monticello, Warren, Crossett, Star City, El Dorado, and Little Rock as well as Johnstown, Pa., Shreveport, and New Orleans.
Rebecca Spencer served two years as president of the Drew County Friends of the Library and Mark Spencer recently served as the guest speaker for the annual officers’ institute of the Arkansas Reading Association.
The ARA is affiliated with the International Reading Association and has the second largest membership of any state in the country. The ARA is a professional organization of individuals, institutions, and councils dedicated to promoting reading and developing literacy.
